Is Your Head in the Clouds?

The Cloud – and it has zero to do with the weather!

It can be overwhelming when one says, “are you in the cloud?” What are they asking? Am I clueless and have my head in a fog, or is it regarding my IT?

Well, in this instant, it’s option ‘B’ – your IT.

First let’s break the clouds down…Cloud computing has two meanings. The first, and most common, refers to running workloads remotely over the internet in a commercial provider’s data center, AKA, ‘public cloud’. The most popular offerings are Amazon Web Services (is there anything where they aren’t involved??), Salesforce’s CRM and Microsoft Azure – all representing the notion of cloud computing.

The second meaning? This describes the functionality, or how it works. Cloud computing is a virtualized pool of resources, from raw compute power to applications, available on demand. Think of Dropbox or Google Drive. You – or your business, are procuring cloud services for automation versus manual provisioning. In simple terms – you’re placing your elements in a service provider to utilize their abundance of space. (no more need for floppy disk!).

The best part of cloud innovation? You gain stronger capabilities without the need of investing in additional hardware or software. A win-win, right?

Now, there are several categories of cloud computing services, but the most popular fall into one of these:

SaaS (software as a service)

Your applications (Google G Suite, Microsoft Office 365, etc) are offered via the internet using your browser.

IaaS (infrastructure as a service):

A service providing storage and compute services on a pay-per-use basis. Again, you’ll find Amazon Web Services here (they keep showing up, don’t they?).

PaaS (platform as a service):

This offers a set of services and workflows specifically targeted to developers who can share tools, processes and the like.

FaaS (function as a service):

A category of cloud computing services that provides a platform allowing customers to develop, run, and manage application functionalities without the complexity of building and maintaining the infrastructure typically associated with developing and launching an app.
